Drain Files and Where They Come From
Drain flies closely resemble fruit flies and breed in the decaying organic matter typically found in "j" traps or floor and sink drains. Drain flies can't be eliminated unless you remove their food source and egg laying environment.
Restaurants hotels, homes and other food preparation facilities often experience sanitation problems associated with the organic material that accumulates in drain lines, cracks and crevices, and other non-drain sites. These problems include drain and filth-breeding fly infestations, noxious odors and slow drains. The most effective method of correcting these problems is to remove the organic material. Treating these problems with ordinary drain cleaners, hot water, detergents, bleach, or ammonia is ineffective. The most effective solution is the use of a highly concentrated biological product such as DF 5000 Drain Cleaner with specially selected bacteria strains.
Elimination Of Drain Flies
To eliminate flies, a total sanitation program must be undertaken. Standing water, food waste, and other potential breeding areas must be cleaned up. Once that is accomplished, the primary breeding areas (drains) can be attacked. Take the screens off floor and trough drains and scrape the organic matter from under the screens or tracks.
Drain Treatments
To clean out the drain, apply 4 oz. per drain for 5 days. Pour product around the opening so it flows down the sides of the vertical pipe walls. Repeat this process for every drain in your establishment. After the initial 5 day treatment plan, treat the same drains on a monthly basis to assure that the build up does not return. Flies can re-infest an area within 2-3 months if the use of the Solutions Drain Cleaner is discontinued. For optimal fruit fly elimination, it is recommended to apply the Solutions Drain Cleaner 2-3 times month per drain.
Make sure to treat every drain except toilets and urinals. Floor drains, hand sinks, beer trap drains, cooler drains, and all others must be treated. If some drains are clean and others are dirty, flies will just move to another area to lay their eggs.
Use more product for larger drains. Each treatment of a floor drain should be at least 4 ounces . Basically, use about an ounce of product for each 1" pipe diameter. Make sure to pour the product all the way around the opening to coat the pipe walls. Pouring product down the center of a drain opening will not eliminate flies. Remove screens if they interfere with proper application.
Discontinue pouring bleach down drains. This can kill large numbers of the beneficial bacteria and reduce effectiveness of the Solutions Drain Cleaner.
